"(un)Holy Grail" --> oil on canvas + context and interpretation. Context: The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the USA in 1886 to celebrate freedom and abolition of slavery. Its makers, French Freemasons Bartholi and Eiffel were philosophically "enlightened", referring to the Era of Enlightenment, the philosophical movement that took place in Europe during the 18th century. They were advocating for individual liberties, tolerance, equality, the separation of the Church and the State, etc. Jefferson was strongly inspired by these ideals when writing the Constitution. The statue is an allegory of Freedom and Justice. She could be the Roman goddess Libertas / Greek Athena / Babylonian Ishtar / Egyptian Isis, as well as Columbia, the personification of America. Like a benevolent mother, she guides her children out of the dark and enlightens us with Knowledge, Liberty and Justice. So 130 years later, what's the deal? •The State and The Church have been separated in most Western civilizations, but we are still afflicted with religious fanaticism. •The sad dark-skinned woman: Slavery is abolished, genders are equal. But is it really?...as a people we're still chained by ignorance, which gives way to fear and contempt of the Other. It is time we transcend the past and evolve together. * Cinderella's Louboutin glass slipper: Consumerism is our favorite fairy tale. We do not strive for intellectual elevation : we want material goods to make up for our lack of substance. * We take freedom, education & our individual rights for granted... history suggests we should not. The rest of the World is knocking on our doors with bloody knuckles, starved and thirsty, also shouting at us we should not! Let's take an honest look around. Food for thought: Hitler was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 1939 for his great efforts to achieve peace during WWII.
